How to Enhance Your Practice with Contrast in Movement

Contrast in movement is one of the most powerful ways for you to not only enhance your Pilates practice, but to achieve better movement throughout your day-to-day activities.

Contrast is movement in opposite directions that occurs simultaneously in your body, such as push and pull, down and up. As someone who loves moving in whole ways, this is one of my favorite things to teach. Contrast allows us to move the entire body, in different directions, putting movements together to enhance stability.

To visualize this, consider a piece of artwork. My daughter loves to draw and finds it visually appealing, as an aesthetic to use contrasting colors to create order, dimension, style and flavor in her pieces. Contrast in movement works the same way. It’s the pop of blue ocean against yellow sand that your muscles are craving.
